Garibaldi II

Designed by:  Sara Morgan

This very special collection from Sara Morgan features favorite Garibaldi prints in brilliant reds, sharp blacks and soft creams. These extraorinary fabrics were discovered as a result of an estate appraisal and are just a small sampling of the treasures which were found.

Dating back to around 1860, when Giuseppe Garibaldi and his volunteer “army” were wildly popular as an Italian heroes, the signature “red shirt”became a staple fashion for women. The original Garibaldi jacket was “scarlet cashmere with military trimmings of gold braid, and was hailed as ‘the gem of the season’”. The jacket/shirt began to appear in white and lighter color versions, as well, but Garibaldi’s original style was a bright red woolshirt. This group of prints reflect the popularity of the colors and motifs of the well-known Italian nationist who is credited with charming both men and women into following him for “the cause”.

The Garibaldi 11 collection is my favorite of these three. I would make a large Ohio Star quilt with it. The beautiful stripes would make great borders. Lots of pretty hand quilting in the light areas and simple stippling in the dark areas.

Love this collection! Reproduction fabrics are my favorites. I would make a traditional quilt probably a churn dash or Ohio Star pattern.

My favorite is the dark chocolate and lilac because of the unusual combination. I would make a new quilt for my grandaughter because the one I made for her graduation travels back and forth to college every weekend and this way she would have one in each place.
