Cheshire Plain

Designed by:  Sara Morgan

Cheshire Plain, Estate Collection, 1840-1850

Cheshire's name was originally derived from an early name for Chester, meaning the shire of the city of legions. At the end of the 18th century, land enclosure and district reorganizations took place. Industrialization of the Lancashire and Manchester mill towns saw Cheshire farms and local businesses abandoned as workers sought a better life in the industrial towns. These lands were absorbed into bigger estates - it was not unusual for an estate to own thousands and thousands of acres.

This collection comes from just such an estate. During one of Sara’s many travels abroad, she was lucky enough to meet a curator and get a glimpse of these beautiful fabrics, some of which she purchased to add to her already incredible collection of vintage fabrics.  Industrialization also bought benefits to Cheshire. The completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal in the late 1700s and innovations such as the Anderton Boat Lift, allowed Cheshire cheese and salt to become major county exports.  At the same time, the silk industry was developing in nearby Macclesfield.  Cheshire continued to develop into a wealthy county in the 19th century. The railways came through Cheshire in the 1830s. The Grand Junction Railway was authorized by Parliament in 1833 and opened for business in July 1837.
